A Berkeley Engineering Master’s Degree Built for Working Professionals

The Master of Advanced Study in Engineering (MAS-E) is a flexible online Berkeley Engineering master’s degree designed for working engineers and STEM professionals seeking advanced expertise in the technologies shaping the future of industry.

Built for professionals who want to grow without stepping away from their careers, MAS-E combines the rigor of a Berkeley Engineering education with the flexibility of online, self-paced learning. Students build technical depth in high-growth fields while tailoring their degree through electives that support broader engineering fluency, career mobility, and long-term professional advancement.

Learn from Berkeley Engineering Faculty

MAS-E courses are developed and taught by Berkeley Engineering faculty and instructors working across advanced technical fields, including AI, robotics, advanced manufacturing, energy systems, infrastructure, data science, and human-centered design.

Students engage with recorded lectures, applied coursework, projects, and live online office hours designed to support flexible learning without sacrificing academic quality.

Designed to Fit a Working Professional’s Life

MAS-E is fully online and self-paced, giving students the flexibility to continue working while advancing their education. Students have up to four years to complete the 24-unit degree and may finish in less than two years if enrolled full time.

Build a Degree Around Your Career Goals

MAS-E offers three interdisciplinary concentrations in emerging engineering fields, supported by a broader elective curriculum that allows students to expand beyond a single technical domain.

Students can combine concentration coursework with electives in areas such as AI and machine learning, software engineering, optimization, energy systems, advanced manufacturing, resilient infrastructure, human-centered design, and engineering leadership.

This structure allows students to build both specialized expertise and cross-disciplinary technical perspective aligned with evolving career goals and industry needs.

Tuition and Investment

MAS-E tuition is billed per course, allowing students to pay as they progress through the program. The current tuition rate is $1,750 per unit, for a total of $42,000 for the 24-unit degree, plus applicable campus fees. This rate applies regardless of residency location or status. As listed on the current page, fee amounts are subject to change by term.

  • MAS-E tuition reimbursement may be offered by your organization. Talk with your HR representative and share this link to see if the MAS-E qualifies.
  • For additional information on financial aid, please visit the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office Cost of Attendance website.
  • This program has a non-refundable application fee. For other information on refunds after withdrawal and non-refundable fees after the first day of instruction, please refer to this link from the UC Berkeley Office of the Registrar.
  • If you are or will be utilizing veterans’ educational benefits to fund your degree, contact the Veterans Benefits Unit at veteransbenefits@berkeley.edu for information regarding whether the overall program fee is covered or includes fees that are not covered.

MAS-E Tuition Fee Example

The following is meant to serve as an example of a typical semester’s fee structure. The amounts for each fee are subject to change each term, and can vary from what is depicted in the chart below.

Tuition:

Tuition is billed at $1,750 per unit.

Example calculation:

If a student takes 3 1-unit courses with the MAS-E program, that student will be billed for tuition with the following calculation:

3 units x $1,750/unit = $5,250

Fees:

Term Fall Spring Summer
Fee Type
Campus Fee $871.75 $871.75 $466
Instructional Resilience Fee $141 $141 $0
SHIP Fee* $3,924 $3,924 $1,979
Document Management Fee** $115 $115 $73
Transit Fee $229 $229 $114.50

With an example of 3 1-unit course load, here are the projections for each term:

Fall: $10,530.75 ($5,250+$5,280.75)
Spring: $10,530.75 ($5,250+$5,280.75)
Summer: $7,882.50 ($5,250+$2,632.50)

*SHIP stands for the Student Health Insurance Program. The University requires all students to automatically become enrolled in a student health insurance plan, unless they fill out a
SHIP waiver within the appropriate deadlines.  MAS-E staff will send out reminders to students about deadlines for SHIP waivers for each term.

**The Document Management fee will only be assessed one time in a student’s first semester with the program. This fee will not show up in subsequent semesters’ billing.
