Interdisciplinary concentrations

The MAS-E degree program offers three interdisciplinary concentrations:

  1. AI/ML, Robotics, and Controls (AIRC)
  2. Energy, Infrastructure & the Environment (EIE)
  3. Advanced Electronics Manufacturing & Materials (AEMM)

Note: If you entered the program before Spring 2026 you are still eligible to complete one of the previously offered concentrations instead.

Students elect a concentration to focus their studies; each concentration has eight required courses. Students then choose 14 electives, and finish up with a 2-unit capstone course.

  1. Concentration (8 units): 8 required units specific to the concentration – including one of either ENGIN 202A or ENGIN 203.
  2. Electives (14 units): 14 units from any part of the MAS-E course catalog.
  3. Interdisciplinary Capstone Project (2 units): Students will integrate cutting-edge knowledge and technical skills to address an interdisciplinary engineering challenge.

AI/ML, Robotics, and Controls (AIRC)

Want to design and deploy the next generation of autonomous systems? The AI/ML, Robotics and Controls concentration of the online MAS-E program equips you with technical expertise in system design, programming, data structures, and physical robotic design. Combining advanced coursework in the dynamics of mobility (of both legged robots and aerial taxis) with human-centered design, you leave the program with a competitive combination of skills that does not simply teach you the underlying algorithms and aerodynamics, but equips you to build autonomous technologies that interact safely and effectively with the humans and society.

Come build that future with us in UC Berkeley’s flexible online degree.

Energy, Infrastructure & the Environment (EIE)

Want to design the resilient systems a changing planet demands? The Energy, Infrastructure & the Environment concentration of the online MAS-E program equips you with a modern engineering toolkit: from the mechanics of renewable energy like solar and wind to the complexities of nuclear power and the protection of infrastructure against earthquakes and wildland fires. By integrating expertise in the natural world and energy systems with human-centered design, you’ll graduate ready to lead large-scale projects that protect both communities and ecosystems.

Come build the technical foundation to navigate the climate crisis with UC Berkeley’s flexible online degree.

Advanced Electronics Manufacturing & Materials (AEMM)

Interested in the design and fabrication of cutting-edge hardware? The Advanced Electronics Manufacturing & Materials concentration for the online MAS-E program equips you with a comprehensive framework for the electronic material lifecycle, from atomic-scale design to global manufacturing. You’ll bridge the gap between quantum physics and structural analysis to master the modern fabrication techniques essential for microelectronics and photovoltaic technologies.

By integrating technical expertise with human-centered design, you’ll graduate ready to lead R&D initiatives and manufacturing projects in the semiconductor industry and advanced hardware sectors with UC Berkeley’s flexible online degree.
